Astra Film Fest is a biennial festival, unique in this part of Europe. It offers the opportunity for documentary makers from all over the world to meet, and promotes the production of good quality non-fiction, non-commercial film in Romania and in the region. It also encourages discussions related to the use of visual media in social scientific research and journalism.
Large audiences of filmgoers, students and teachers from all over Central and Eastern Europe are expected, especially as AFF 2006 will take place only two months before the city of Sibiu is made the Cultural Capital of Europe in 2007.
The 8th AFF welcomes recently finished films made within the past two years, with unlimited theme and length, for the four competition sections:
International
Eastern European
Romanian
Student
Films must have cinematographic qualities, artistic commitment and a strong presence of the filmmaker's point of view both in form and content.
Reconstructions, experimental films, and mainstream commercial television documentaries are not accepted.
The Festival offers a variety of special programmes: portraits of world famous ethnographic/documentary film-makers, theme sections, photography exhibitions, visual anthropology workshops etc.
