Research is everything when it comes to making docs and the researchers role is an essential part of any production and an effective way into the television industry. Knowing how to research well is a fine art to master.

You will learn how to access, analyse and use information in a confident manner: how to make the best use of the Internet for film research, how to access archive footage and stills and how to find contributors and locations. You will discover the different approaches to research needed for different documentary genres from historical, investigative and cultural to international documentaries. The legal framework that can inform production will be examined as well as how to get results when you are researching under the constraints of time and tight budgets.

As well as developing your research skills, you will gain an understanding of the roles of the different people you will work with from independent producers to media lawyers and archivists.

Whether you are keen to develop and improve your research skills for your own documentary, or wanting to enter the industry, this course will get you researching creatively and effectively.

You may also be interested in the Directing, Interviewing and the Ethics of Documentary to make sure you get the most out of your research.
