You've written a proposal, or maybe gained some interest in your idea, but most broadcasters, funders, directors and producers will want to see a script or a treatment. How do you go from the initial idea to a well-developed script, and what are the most common mistakes people make? This practical workshop focuses on moving your from idea to actuality, adding depth, possibility and originality to your film.

This course is to assist individuals in developing the idea into a treatment; a critical stage in documentary for budding producers, directors and filmmakers. There are many ideas around but it takes a lot of work to make the idea into a programme.

Formulating a treatment is a means to turning your original concept into a workable format for your film. This course will discuss the different forms of treatment used for different genres (e.g. arts documentary script, describing an observational journey).

Other topics include:
  • Finding an angle for your film
  • Negotiating exclusive access
  • Developing a storyline
  • Thinking of the story visually
Participants will discuss how to present their ideas and treatments and who to target.

You will leave with the confidence to decide on the right format for your treatment.

It is essential that you attend the course with your doc idea ready to be developed and worked on throughout the day.
