Director's Masterclass with Paul Watson
When:
TBC
Where:
DFG, London
"Paul Watson is one of the giants of documentary film-making. Over several decades he has created a string of memorable and often controversial documentaries, always striving for innovation in both form and content and invariably succeeding.”
- John Willis, BAFTA TV Committee Chair.
This is your chance to participate in an intimate and interactive directors masterclass with the godfather of current-day observational documentary, Paul Watson.
Bask in this exclusive day-long workshop with the BAFTA award-winning director, who has made over 300 films, ranging from the ground-breaking docu-soap The Family (1974), which thrust working-class voices onto the BBC, to Rain in My Heart (2006) and Malcolm and Barbara (2007).
Enrich your understanding of the practical process of documentary filmmaking through Paul Watson’s eyes, and gain invaluable insight into the directorial and editorial decisions he has made, in what promises to be a lively session full of tips and advice for participants.
The day will focus on documentary structure, shape and form. Paul will talk about his films and method of working, covering issues which include:
- Documentary ethics and taboos
- The history, development and evolution of the observational documentary
- The process of editing for documentary
- The examination of directorial and editorial decisions made in relation to his work
Paul is very keen that the day is highly interactive and DFG would like to stress the importance of participants attending with an interesting range of questions for him to tackle to enrich the day and encourage debate.
About Paul Watson
In the last year alone, Paul Watson has been awarded both the BAFTA Special Award for Outstanding Creative Contribution to the industry, and the Grierson trustees' award for "outstanding contribution to the art of documentary film-making", as well as a host of other awards including the Prix Europa.
The emergence in the UK of fly-on-the-wall documentary and, following that, reality television has often been traced to Paul Watson, a revered and controversial figure in British documentary.
From a background in art - he studied at the Royal College of Art and was a painter before becoming a filmmaker - he has credits as director, commissioning editor and executive producer, working at the BBC and Granada before setting up an independent production company (Priory Pictures) in 1992. Films such as Malcolm and Barbara and series such as The Family have firmly established him as a documentary maker of note.

Marilyn Gaunt
Marc Isaacs
Kim Longinotto
Patrick Collerton
