Directing and Interviewing Techniques for Documentary

When:
Thurs and Fri 23-24 October 2008

Where:
DFG London

This workshop focuses on giving you the necessary skills to direct documentaries and conduct interviews that engage your audience.

When you're directing it’s all too easy to shoot everything that moves and then end up tearing your hair out in the edit. Through examination of various documentary styles and practical exercises you will learn about:
•    Working with a crew
•    Preparation – shot lists and storyboards
•    Working out the shooting order
•    How to cover a scene
•    Establishing a style

Good interviewing techniques are fundamental to successful documentary practice. This workshop is aimed at documentary researchers and directors who wish to improve their interviewing skills and learn this all-important, but often neglected craft. Using examples from film and television participants will be introduced to a range of different interview techniques, and through demonstrations, shooting and reviewing short interviews you will explore the core skills involved in this process:
•    The golden rules of open question interviewing
•    How to prepare an interview so that your questions will not be heard   in the final product
•    How to bring the best out of your subjects
•    The difference between interviewing styles
•    How to find the right time and place

These sessions are highly interactive and participants are very much involved in discussion and debate throughout the day.
