Standard release form

Whether it's your mum or the Mayor of London, anyone who appears in your film needs to have agreed to that appearance. Some people use on-camera releases (and FourDocs prefer these) but it's always worth having a written release, and most broadcasters will only accept these.

A general rule to consider is whether the person is in the shot intentionally as opposed to incidentally. For instance, passers-by in the street will generally not need to sign a release, as long as it's obvious that you're filming them, and you are filming general shots that don't pick anyone out in particular. An interview with your main character will certainly warrant a release form.

If you are filming in a private establishment where there are lots of people - such as a club - then often a notice of intended filming placed somewhere prominent would be acceptable. The exception of this is in potentially sensitive areas such as a gay bar or a political meeting.

However, if you're unsure then it's always worth checking.
