indieWIRE acquired by SnagFilms

SnagFilms, a new web service which launched in beta mode this week, has acquired independent film site indieWIRE. In a move that will see it continue to operate as an independent, standalone site, indieWIRE will also provide archival and news content for SnagFilms.com and the company's virtual movie theater widgets, including breaking news from the indie sector, comprehensive film reviews and analysis, and the top relevant blogs.

At the same time, SnagFilms will provide new resources to extend indieWIRE's coverage.

Founded in 1996, North American-based indieWIRE is a leading source on independent film, publishing dispatches from film festivals, weekly movie reviews, interviews with emerging and established filmmakers, links to leading blogs, and resources for filmmakers and the entertainment industry.

indieWIRE co-founder and Editor-in-Chief Eugene Hernandez stated in his letter to indieWIRE readers: "We created indieWIRE twelve years ago to fill a gap for filmmakers and the industry. The concept was to create a platform to deliver news, information and other resources. Along the way, indieWIRE emerged as a hub for the community."

He went on to state: "We guarantee our commitment to maintaining indieWIRE's integrity, and I also want to focus on what we can do to bolster our own fledgling social network, IndieLoop."

Hernandez will also become Editorial Vice President of SnagFilms, overseeing journalistic content on both sites. He will be assisted in this by his indieWIRE colleagues, Brian Brooks and James Israel, who will continue in the same functions after the acquisition. Financial arrangements were not disclosed.
