Winners announced for the British Independent Film Awards

At a ceremony last night in central London, Michael Winterbottom's docu-drama The Road to Guantanamo, won the award for Best British Documentary. Following the story of the Tipton Three - the three British men who were held at the US prison on Cuba's Guantanamo Bay until spring 2005 - the film uses interviews with the men following their release as the backbone to the dramatised events. It was broadcast on Channel 4 last year and has already won numerous awards, including the Silver Bear for Direction at this year's Berlin International Film Festival.

Other nominees in the category for Best Documentary were Sophie Fiennes' latest film The Perverts Guide to Cinema, Blindsight by Lucy Walker, first-time filmmaker Jake Clennell's The Great Happiness Space: Tale of an Osaka Love Thief and Unknown White Male, directed by Rupert Murray.
