Wellcome Collection Stages First Ever Public Broadcast Of Live Surgery From UK Hospital

© Marc Quinn © Marc Quinn The first ever public broadcast of a UK hospital operation to a public audience took place at Wellcome Collection last night (Thursday 5 July).

The broadcast, produced by DFG's sister company Mosaic Films and directed by Lucy Baxter, featured eminent heart surgeon Francis Wells and the team at Papworth Hospital, Cambridge performing open-heart surgery. The satellite link allowed the audience in London to question the surgical team as they carried out the complex reconstruction of a heart valve. During the evening the audience of 220 people were also able to inspect at close quarters some of the equipment used in the operation, guided by members of the Papworth Hospital medical team and fellow heart surgeon Sam Nashef.

The live broadcast featured two cameras plus a 'stab-wound' camera, allowing the audience to see deep into the heart and watch the operation up close and personal.

The event was linked to Wellcome Collection’s Heart exhibition and was run collaboration with Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.
