The Grierson Trust and Sheffield Doc/Fest Announce Documentary Awards

Sheffield Doc/Fest has partnered with The Grierson Trust to launch three new British documentary awards The Grierson:Sheffields. These new award categories are The Green Award, The Youth Jury Award and The Innovation Award.

The partnership kicks off at the 2007 Doc/Fest in November and The Grierson:Sheffields will be awarded on Saturday 10 November.

The Grierson:Sheffields criteria:

Documentaries for the Green and Innovation Awards must have received their first UK screening between 1 May 2006 and 30 April 2007.

The Green Award
A single documentary, or an episode from a strand or a series exploring environmental issues that have made a contribution to the climate change debate. The category is also open to documentaries that have been produced in an environmentally friendly way and adhere to the Green Code Guidelines. For more information visit http://greencodeproject.org. Entrants must provide a 50-word description on how the documentary meets either of these criteria. The judging panel will select a short list of four documentaries, which will be available to watch during the festival in the videotheque. The entry fee is £60 + VAT. Carbon Planet, a CO2 emissions reduction company will conduct a free Carbon Emission Audit for the winning documentary.

The Innovation Award
A documentary that exhibits innovation in style or content. The award is open to all forms of documentary – long form theatrical, one-hour TV doc, projects delivered online or across multiple platforms. Documentaries in this category will demonstrate outstanding and brave approach to production or subject. Entrants must provide a 50-word pitch describing how their entry is innovative. The judging panel will select a short list of four documentaries, which will be available to watch during the festival in the videotheque. The entry fee is £60+VAT.

The Youth Jury Award
Open only to films selected for Sheffield Doc/Fest programme, and the shortlist will be chosen by the festival programmer and a youth jury. The award will be given to the film that is most engaging for young audiences and will be chosen by a jury of young people aged 16-18 years, and chaired by a member of the Grierson Trust. This is not an award for documentaries made by young people, but a prize awarded by young people. There is no entry fee for this category.
