Sheffield Docfest Goes on Tour
Wednesday sees the start of the three-month
Sheffield Docfest Tour 2007
with the screening of A Crude Awakening in conjunction with Dochouse at the Barbican. The film, highlighting the ongoing political and economic instability worldwide due to our oil consumption, screened to great acclaim at the festival last November, which marked its launch as the world's first carbon-neutral documentary festival.
The tour will then take highlights of the festival to 15 regional cinemas between March and May 2007, including Bradford, Edinburgh, Nottingham, Cardiff and Chichester.

Last Days of Yasser Arafat
Australian-Palestinian director Sherine Salama headed to Ramallah in September 2003 sure that Yasser Arafat’s days were numbered and that he had a story to tell. Rebuffed in her efforts to meet the President, she returns the following year. and is granted a twenty-minute interview, which turns out to be Arafat’s last. In the following days, as Arafat lays dying, Salama records every twist and turn that occurs to create this Intimate and insightful documentary of the great historic event.

Dreaming By Numbers
Most people who’ve dreamt of a limping cockroach would laugh it off and forget about it. Not the Neapolitans - there could be money in it. Maria and Angela run a local lottery office inherited from their parents. They’re well known for their ability to attach numbers to anything, with the help of a revered book called The Grimace. Local murders, police raids, bizarre events, all have their number potential as Naples’ citizens try to win their way out of poverty.

Motodrome
At the Motodrome, grown men perform bike stunts while riding at breakneck speed in a wooden barrell for an appreciative crowd. Jörg Wagner’s thrilling homage stylishly captures the atmosphere of this dying fairground attraction.

No Man is an Island
In beautifully composed images, director Sonja Lindén tells the story of a man living alone on an island. Aside from daily phone conversations to his sick wife, and the company of his cat, he busies himself preparing for his death. A memorable film about loneliness, love and letting go.

Chances of the World Changing
New Yorker Richard Ogust went to a Chinese restaurant some years ago and decided to rescue a turtle headed for the soup pot. From that small act grew a passion that has consumed his life. He now shares his flat with 1200 turtles and tortoises he has saved from food markets in Southeast Asia. Overwhelmed by the demands of managing his personal ark, Richard decides to create the largest turtle and tortoise conservation institute in the US. But soon finds himself in a complicated battle with state environmental agencies. This beautifully shot film is a meditation on the spirit and devotion that fuel conservationists to defy the extinction of some the planet’s most ancient animals.

Every Good Marriage Begins with Tears
East London girl Shahanara is changing from pink hot pants to a sari, to meet her husband at the airport. Shahanara has only agreed to the marriage to try and heal old wounds with her father, who had banished her from her family for her Western ways. Meanwhile her devout sister Hushnara is being groomed for her own arranged marriage, something that at 19 she doesn’t feel at all ready for. An intimate film, which gives an utterly absorbing insight into a little known community.
