Sheffield DocFest film programme announced

From over 1500 official submissions and travels to documentary film festivals around the world Sheffield Doc/Fest has announced its biggest programme ever with more than 145 feature and short documentaries from over 20 countries.

The festival will screen over 30 world premieres including Sean McAllister’s Japan: A Story of Love and Hate, the return of Toshi Fujiwara’s Fence, Tariq Marzbaan’s The Storm Bird and Made in Sheffield by the legendary Don Letts about Sheffield’s own Tony Christie.

Amidst over 100 UK, International and EU premieres, The Regime Change strand houses some of the strongest of the international crop with the legendary DA Pennebaker and Chris Hegedus’ UK premiere of The Return Of The War Room. Pennebaker and Chris Hegedus will be in tow with a special extended Q&A session after the Friday night screening plus a masterclass on Sunday.

The festival opens on Wednesday night with the stunning and compelling Thriller in Manila which blows apart the Muhammad Ali myth and if that’s not enough James Toback’s amazing: Tyson – the in-depth portrait of one of the world’s greatest and most notorious boxers screens on Friday night.

A special focus on the Toronto Film Festival means Doc/Fest gets first look at five of their best docs including the Japanese whaling thriller At The Edge Of The World by Dan Stone in the Green Doc strand, the philosopher’s stone re-awakened in Examined Life by Astra Taylor and the gastronomic extravaganza Biggest Chinese Restaurant in the World by Weijun Chen.

Two more strands - the Arts Docs and Kinky Docs have been added, with a special contribution by Sophie Fiennes in Arts Docs, which will focus on the arts and artists in documentary.

And Mark Cousins returns to present a very special collection of documentaries by Japan’s answer to John Grierson, Shinsuke Ogawa. All five docs have never screened in the UK before and assistant director to Ogawa, Toshio Iizuka, will be at the festival to discuss Ogawa’s working practice and his distinctive approach to documentary.
