One World Media Awards - Winners Announced

The winners of the 2008 One World Media Awards were announced last night at a ceremony in central London. Host Jon Snow, who once again made the dash across London from presenting the Channel 4 news, got the evening off to a suitably bright start by joining the Archbishop of York in a rendition of the Ugandan national anthem.

From that point on, the emphasis was on celebrating the achievements made by journalists and filmmakers around the world in bringing issues surrounding development to a wider audience.

Winners included John Pilger's War on Democracy, which beat Oscar-winner Taxi to the Darkside to the TV Documentary award. True Stories' China's Stolen Children, produced for Channel 4's Dispatches and already the recipient of many awards, picked up the Children's Rights Award, while War/Dance, screened by DFG this evening, won the International Premiere Award in a tie with End of the Rainbow.

The awards are run by the One World Broadcasting Trust, the UK-based organisation which exists to increase global understanding through effective use of the media.
