MeetMarket Training Workshops Across the UK

Sheffield Doc/Fest is inviting producers to attend special workshops in 6 regions of the UK, offering complete preparation for getting your project funded at this year's Marketplace.

Doc /Fest presents the UK's biggest international documentary marketplace which includes the unique pitching initiative: MeetMarket* where, in pre-scheduled one-on-one meetings, documentary makers pitch their newest projects to dozens of UK and international buyers, EP's, commissioning editors and distributors. MeetMarket provides high quality, original ideas with the possibility to be fast-tracked from development to production, in a supportive and dynamic setting.

The workshops are an opportunity to prepare your projects for the Marketplace at Sheffield. Offering an exclusive window into the priorities of the international documentary market, this is a chance to learn what UK, European, North American and other decision-makers are looking for right now from you.

Taking place in Belfast, Cardiff, London, Inverness and Sheffield in June and July, the workshops are an opportunity for producers and filmmakers in those regions to develop projects one-on-one with the Doc/Fest team, as well as peers. The workshops are funded by the agencies in those regions so applications are limited at this stage to producers in Northern Ireland, Wales, London and Scotland. Led by international marketplace specialists Christina Burnett and Karolina Lidin, this is an invaluable opportunity to refine both your ideas and project presentation skills. Projects can be at any stage of development. Last year's workshops led directly to 17 of the 39 projects eventually being selected for MeetMarket. There are many other opportunities to pitch your project at Sheffield if you are not in the MeetMarket and this workshop will help you prepare for the market opportunities at the festival.

The projected worth of sales in negotiation sparked at MeetMarket 2007 adds up to £4,321,980, and rising.

"MeetMarket surprised me: I had an extraordinarily creative response to my film from 23 intelligent men and women who care passionately about documentaries. They reflected my story back to me and I came out richer – not just financially, although I have already been offered money to complete my film, but in terms of valuing my project." - MeetMarket participant 2007

Places for these workshops are very limited. To express interest, and for more information, please email Marketplace Producer Charlie Phillips at charlie@sidf.co.uk stating your name, company and region you are based in. Doc/Fest is hoping to run more workshops in other nations and regions in the future and, depending on support for the workshops in other areas, we will announce those - but at this stage please only send your expression of interest if you are based in one of the above nations and regions.

These workshops have been made possible through the kind support of The MEDIA Programme of the European Union, The Skillset Film Skills Fund, Film London, Northern Ireland Screen, Teldwyr Annibynnol Cymru and Highlands and Islands Enterprise. The Skillset Film Skills Fund is supported by the National Lottery through the UK Film Council and the film industry through the Skills Investment Fund

*MeetMarket is based on an original initiative of the Australian Film Commission (AFC) and The Australian International Documentary Conference (AIDC).
