Doc Day Afternoon at Sheffield DocFest

Wednesday 5 November 2008 10am - 6pm
Hallam University Student Union Building, (HUBS) Paternoster Row, Sheffield

This year, Sheffield Doc/Fest and DFG are extending their collaboration to include DocDay Afternoon, an inspiring, intensive and entertaining day of hands-on workshops, screenings and filmmaking surgeries for 16-19 year-olds.

Participants must all be working on a short documentary at the time of the workshop, whether individually or in groups. The aim is to get finished docs of about 4-minutes ready to put out in the world. Some of the best documentary practitioners from around the UK – directors, producers, editors and commissioners - will be there to help with the production process!

DocDay Afternoon is for A-level students (or 16-19 year olds) who are making, or want to make, documentaries and could use help from the experts. There will be presentations, workshops and a range of leading industry mentors available on the day to help students with their short doc productions, giving feedback, advice and technical assistance. The mentors are a mix of award-winning directors, commissioners, TV executives and other documentary professionals - students will never find this kind of access to industry advice at any other event in the UK.

DocDay Afternoon requests that teachers get students working on ideas for short documentaries from September onwards – ready to arrive at the workshop ready with a project they would like to develop. Teachers are encouraged to bring groups of participants working together rather than individual film-makers. Students and teachers are strongly encouraged to get direct advice in advance from Suzana or Charlie in the Doc/Fest Office on 0114 2765141 or Charlie@sidf.co.uk to help prepare for the workshop day.

Cost is £10 per student. For just £10 you get the full talks, workshops and an exclusive documentary screening (see itinerary below). Teachers accompanying a group of students go free!
