DFG Films & Five News Re-Launch New Directors Initiative - Five Films

Five Films is now closed and the shortlist has been chosen. If you have not been contacted by phone you have not been shortlisted. Thanks to all those who applied to this scheme.

DFG Films and Five News once again join forces to produce “Five Films”, an exciting and innovative short documentary scheme, which encourages emerging independent filmmakers to make their mark on Britain’s news.

We are looking for ideas for 3 minute documentaries from film makers all over the UK. Short-listed applicants will pitch their idea to a panel of producers and news editors from DFG Films and Five News at the Sheffield Docfest Newcomers Day on Thursday 2nd November 2006.

Following from the successful first series of five 3 minute films, broadcast on Five News in summer 2006, Five Films represents a real break into the world of news and current affairs, producing 5 x 3 minute, topical domestic news pieces for transmission on the Channel 5 news in December 2006.

We are looking for strong, contemporary domestic story lines, from all over the UK. The emphasis is on the cultural richness and diversity of Britain, and we are looking for film-makers from a range of ethnic backgrounds. Applicants must have experience of the directing and shooting, from AP level or beyond. The films must be suitable for shooting on a tight budget and schedule, and must be no longer than three minutes. Films will be transmitted on Five News in December 2006.

A call for submissions is now open for proposals for 3 minute films in digital format, and those selected will receive:
•    full production support, including crew, equipment, training, DV stock and editing facilities.
•    tailor-made training for your project, and a fantastic grounding in current affairs programming
•    the opportunity to showcase your film on a primetime slot for Five News
•    A Director’s fee, for the duration of the shoot only

5 films will be commissioned.  For application guidelines and application form please visit http://www.dfgdocs.com/Resources/Five_Films.aspx or contact Lucy Baxter on 0207 428 0882 or lucy[at]dfgdocs[dot]com

Applications deadline: 5pm, Thursday 26th October 2006.

DFG Films is committed to producing quality documentaries and giving production opportunities to new and emerging filmmakers. We produced the award-winning, and Grierson-nominated series “Animated Minds”, and a variety of projects for Channel 4, Channel 5, and ITV, including the “Reel London” series.

Five News is one of the channel's signature programmes.  In its first year on air  (March 30th 1997) Five News won three Royal Television Society awards for innovation and journalism and it pioneered new methods of reporting the news, which are now standard practice on British TV. Today Five News consists of three main weekday programmes at 11:30am, 5:30pm and at 7pm, and two minute news bulletins on the hour between 6 and 10pm. At weekends it runs a scaled back service with its main programmes in the early evening.

Five has a dedicated team of four presenters: John Suchet, Kate Gerbeau, Helen Fospero, and Priya Kaur-Jones plus ten general reporters. We have access to the huge resources of Sky News with around 30 reporters and camera teams at home and abroad.
