British High Commission awards Indian filmmakers
The British High Commission has awarded the 2006 UK environment film fellowships to Sonya V. Kapoor, Gurmeet Sapal, Himanshu Malhotra, Jay Mazoomdar, Kalpana Subramanian, Ashima Narain and Balan. The fellowships were created to fund young Indian filmmakers with original ideas on the theme of “Wildlife Crime.” The films are scheduled to be completed by December 2006 and will be aired on Discovery Channel as well as screened at the
Wildscreen Festival
in India to be held January 2007.
The documentaries that will be presented are:
Once there was a purple butterfly
(Sonya V. Kapoor)
A look into the extinction of butterflies in the Indian subcontinent.
Killers of the king
(Gurmeet Sapal)
A film about the beauty, vulnerability and threatened existence of leopards on the hills of Uttaranchal.
Vanishing Seas
(Himanshu Malhotra)
An investigation into the unexplored world of marine trade and its negative impact on our habitat.
The Hunted
(Jay Mazoomdar)
A film that aims to address the tiger trade by disengaging the forest-dwelling hunter and offering them viable livelihood options.
Turtles in a soup
(Kalpana Subramanian)
An account of turtle poaching and trade in the Gangetic river basin and Kolkata markets.
The Last Dance
(Ashima Narain)
A story that highlights the intricate poaching syndicate within India and across its borders, especially in regards to the Indian Sloth bear.
The Silenced Witness
(Balan)
A film on the crimes inflicted on both domesticated and wild elephants in Kerala.
The UK Environment Film Fellowships for 2006 on wildlife crime is funded by
Defra
(Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) from the WSSD Implementation Fund under the UK India Sustainable Development Dialogue.
