BAFTA Television Awards announced

It was a night of surprise awards, and not very subtle comments directed toward the great and good of the television world who were sat in the audience at the London Palladium.

Handing out the award for Single Documentary - to True Vision's Evicted - Janet Street Porter praised all four nominated films, and made an impassioned plea for more slots for single documentaries in TV schedules. Earlier that evening, as he collected the award for News Coverage, the producer of the Granada Reports piece Morecambe Bay noted that it was the first time that a regional news programme had won the BAFTA, and praised the quality of an often overlooked sector. He then went on to call for the re-instatement of the BAFTA award for Current Affairs, in recognition of the UK's journalists.

Evicted, directed by Brian Woods, reveals the plight of the UK's homeless families through the young people affected. It beat three other high-profile films, including Paul Watson's acclaimed documentary about alcoholism Rain in my Heart.

Elsewhere, Channel 4's Nuremberg: Goering's Last Stand beat the favourite, BBC's Planet Earth (which left the evening empty handed) to win the award for Specialist Factual, while Sky One got a nod for its series Ross Kemp on Gangs. The full list of factual winners and nominees is below:
