The first Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival was inaugurated in 1989 as part of
activities to commemorate the 100th-year anniversary of the incorporation of Yamagata City. Since then the festival has been held every two years and serves as a place for exchange between people from around the world and Yamagata citizens.
The organisers recently announced a change in management, with the festival now run independently from the Yamagata City authority.
