Tartu
13th - 19th March
2006
The 3rd Tartu Festival of Visual Culture will be held in Estonian
National Museum, Tartu, Estonia.
The festival will present a selection of films from all over the
world. The focus of the WorldFilm is upon all film production that
is not part of mainstream commercial film-making and has some kind
of "anthropological" component. Films from different regions of the
world are most welcome.
In addition to the film program, the festival will offer photo
exhibitions, workshops and roundtables. All films following an
analytical approach to human cultures and societies in a wide
sense, and which have been produced after January 1st 2003, can be
submitted.
The festival provides a forum about the newest
productions primarly in the field of documentary film, but also
other genres (fictional films, animation). The event is open to
all, including filmmakers, researchers, students and others. We try
to provide an environment where filmmakers can discuss their work
with colleagues and the audience.
The WorldFilm 2006 focus will be cultural variations, but also
human rights, lifestyles and relationships between tradition and
modernity. The films can tell stories both from faraway worlds and
filmmakers' home surroundings, bringing them both closer to the
audience. One of the festival's primary mission is educational,
including the offering of alternative viewpoints to those that
everyday media is able to offer.
In addition to the main program, we are looking
forward to a retrospective of John Marshall's works, as well as a
special program of Soviet Estonian documentaries and a selection of
African fiction films.
The first festival under the title of Tartu Visual Culture Week
took place at spring 2004 jointly with Nordic Anthropological Film
Association (NAFA). In addition to the main program, the 2005
WorldFilm festival featured the retrospective of Asen Balikci's
works, a tribute to Jean Rouch, and a roundtable of Estonian
documentary photography.
