Categories include the Official Section (non-competitive) reserved for feature-length fiction films, documentaries (non-fiction) and fiction films under 30 minutes in length, which are innovative in style or content, or are works by directors from emerging film industries, or are works by established directors. A Retrospective Section (non-competitive) paying tribute to a film-maker or film-movement and designed to make a contribution to film history. A Series on a theme (non-competitive) highlighting the cinema of a particular country or region. The Australian Short Films Competition for recent Australian productions under 60 minutes in length. The finalists in this competition are screened on the opening day of the festival. The Discovery Section (non-competitive) featuring first or second feature-length works by emerging new directors.
Awards include the Dendy Awards for Australian Short Films and the FIPRESCI Prize for Best Documentary
The festival requires productions to have been have been completed after 1 January 2004. All works selected for the festival must be available for exhibition on 16mm, 35mm, Digital Beta or Beta SP.
