Pärnu International Documentary and Anthropology Film Festival
Pärnu
2nd - 16th July
2006
Founded in 1987, this is the oldest film festival in Estonia. The
initiator of the festival was former president of the Republic of
Estonia and writer Lennart Meri. Since its first edition, the
festival has built an efficient bridge between cultural
anthropologists and documentary makers from the East and the
West.
The aim of the festival in general is to support cultural survival
of peoples. Only documentary films and videos of high value and
quality, recording human activities in social, historical or
ecological context are accepted for competition screenings.
The festival is held every July. An international jury awards the
grand prix for the best film. Since 1999, a separate competition
has been held for films that will be broadcast in Estonian
Television (Estonian People's Award).
There are 4 categories of competition:
- International documentary competition awarding a Grand Prize
for the best film of the festival; Prize for the best film on
survival of indigenous people; Prize for the best scientific
documentary; Prize for the best art documentary.
- International children's documentary competition, awarding a
prize for the best children's documentary.
- Estonian national documentary competition, awarding a prize for
the best Estonian documentary.
- TV-competition, which hands out the Estonian People's
Award.
