One World International Human Rights Documentary Film Festival

The 9th annual human rights documentary film festival One World, organized by People in Need, will take place in Prague from 28th February to 8th March 2007.
As a part of the One World Festival will consist of an international competition of documentary films and videos, retrospectives, workshops, panel discussions, concerts, photography exhibitions and other events. Audience members will have the possibility to view over 118 documentary films, which were chosen from over 900 submitted films from 40 countries. After the screenings, discussions will be held with the festival guests, representatives of non-governmental organizations, news journalists and experts on the given theme.

The International Human Rights Documentary Film Festival, One World, organized annually since 1999 in Prague and other cities of the Czech Republic by Czech NGO People in Need, has been helping “sister festivals” to be set up in Central and Eastern Europe, as well as the Caucasus and Central Asian countries for several years now. The newest arrival among these sister festivals is One World Kyrgyzstan.
Tolekan Ismailova, Director of the center for human rights’ defence, “Citizens Against Corruption” and also Director of One World Kyrgyzstan, believes that the first edition of the festival will interest a wide audience: “We hope students and young professionals who care about the issues facing our world, activists, intellectuals, filmmakers, religious and minority representatives as well as the wider public will be interested in attending this event and participating in discussions with the filmmakers and experts.”
Organizers selected nine films (four Kyrgyz, five foreign) with an emphasis on problems relevant to today’s society inKyrgyzstan. The main topics include children, minorities, male dominance in the parallel justice system, and the role of women in Islamic society.
