Moscow
9th - 14th October
2006
The third Moscow International Visual Anthropology Festival will be
hosted by Moscow State University.
This years conference will take as its starting point the subject
of the 'mediating camera'. In particular focusing on the position
of an anthropologist with a camera who is permitted by the
representatives of a culture to make a screen image and to show it
to the representatives of other cultures.
The anthropologists' comprehension of his or her
responsibilities, camera skills, knowledge and feelings for the
culture under staudy affect the quality of his results shown in
public. All the operations of this process - that has a main aim of
realization of the intercultural dialogue on (and off) the screen -
are also determined by an anthropologists's perception of him or
herself as a mediator.
The organizers hope that this issue one way or another will be
discussed at all of the screenings (both informational and
competitive) as well as at the seminars which will cover such
issues as: archival ethnographic films, 'Old Believers', Nordic and
Moslem peoples, Visual Anthropology in various countries and the
problems of research, education and TV and broadcasting.
