Now in its eighth year, this festival started life as the Voladero International Film and Video Festival. A diversity of programs are presented in the Festival: The Official Selection of Short Films in Competition and Feature Films in Competition, showcases of Mexican, Latin American and International films, guest films and premieres, lectures, and other complementary events such as the Social Vision showcase for fiction and documentary films presenting relevant social topics that affect the filmmakers’ communities.

Each year the festival invites a country with an important cinematographic tradition to participate as guest of honor. Some of the events are organized around the invited country’s participation are showcases of contemporary and classic cinema, tributes to directors and actors, and a variety of special events. This year the focus is on Argentina.

Submission Details

Official Selection: Feature Film Competition
Open to feature films shot on film or video, over 75 minutes long, and completed after January 1st, 2007. The genre may be Fiction or Documentary. There are no restrictions as to themes or nationality.

The selected films will compete in several categories, including Best Documentary Feature, Best Director, Best Cinematography and Best Editing. Seven documentary features are selected. The winning filmmakers will receive the Cabrito de Plata and sponsored awards.

Official Selection: Short Film Competition
Open to short films shot on film or video, under 30 minutes and over 1 minute in length. Completed after January 1st, 2007. There are no theme or nationality restrictions.

Short films can participate in Fiction, Documentary or Animation categories, with awards for the best film in each category, plus Best Mexican Short Film.

Official Selection: Nuevo Leon Film Competition
Open to short films between 1 minute and 30 minutes in length; completed after January 1st, 2007, made exclusively by filmmakers residing in the State of Nuevo Leon and who can prove their residence since 2004 (proof of address, studies, payroll receipts or press releases). There are no theme restrictions.

Official Selection Non-Competitive
Social Vision: Film for a Better World
Open to short, medium and feature films and videos with a social relevance for the filmmakers’ community. The objective of this section is to highlight the filmmaker as a voice and agent of change in his or her community and culture.

Galeria Indie
The purpose of this section is to promote cultural, ideological and social exchange between Mexico and the border states of the United States of America: California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas.

This section is open to fiction or documentary features shot on film or video, over 75 minutes long, produced independently, with a budget under 250,000 U.S. dollars in Mexico and the border states of the United States of America: California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas, and completed after January 1st, 2007.

The festival accepts 35mm print with standard sound, or Video DV CAM (NTSC) or DVD (PAL or NTSC) format. For those films in an original language other than English or Spanish, the Festival requires English or Spanish subtitles.
