International Student Ethnographic Film Festival
11th - 12th November 2008
London
Organised by the Goldsmiths Anthropology society, the inaugural International Student Ethnographic Film Festival (ISEFF) aims to promote and question the use of ethnographic film in contemporary society. Each evening a seminar and a selection of student films will be presented for discussion.
While highlighting the importance of discussion and critique of this practise, value will also be placed upon the necessity of exposing ethnographic films to new audiences. With a wide range of subject content, these evenings offer an environment for debate for both students and non-students of all disciplines and perspectives. ISEFF encourages dialogue that expands the use and understanding of ethnographic film, allowing interdisciplinary perspectives and consideration beyond an institutional framework.
The festival promotes documentary cinema with a special emphasis on films, videos or interactive media dealing with socio-cultural processes in the wide sense of the term.
- The festival ventures out on promoting the use of documentary films as a means for cultural and cross cultural understanding.
- The festival is open to all filmmakers, but especially those coming from anthropology, sociology, documentary, arts and neighbouring disciplines.
- The festival provides an opportunity for international co-operation, inviting filmmakers from many regions of the world - thus allowing a wide spectrum of films to be shown.
- The festival platform aims at representing a great variety of film styles and structures.
- The festival also engages in seeking for new and broader ways of using such media.
- The festival is meant to be a chance for authors and distributors, but also for festival-comers, film-makers and guest speakers to share their views at the screening, during the following discussions inspired from “theme's night”.
Films selected must have cinematographic qualities, artistic commitment and strong presence of the filmmaker's point of view both in form and content.
Attendance is free.
