With its focus on both film and music, the Flanders International Film Festival - Ghent occupies its own unique place in the international festival landscape. For over two decades now, wthe festival has been holding a competition on "the impact of music on film", and every year sees increasing popularity of the film music concerts and great anticipation as to the winner of the World Soundtrack Awards (WSA). This pioneering role has not gone unrewarded. Not only has Ghent become a meeting place for established and up-and-coming film music talent, but increasing numbers of other festivals are also featuring music. Think of Berlin, Cannes and Karlovy Vary to name but three. Even the European Film Academy has been awarding a prize for the best European film music composer since 2004.
Categories in the competitive festival include: Impact of music on film, Xplore Competition, FNAC Audience Award, Prix UIP Ghent competition for European Shorts (total prize money over 100,000 euro in cash).
Many events and other competitive categories run throughout the festival including competitions, previews, world cinema, a look apart, Belgian cinema today, retrospectives, competitions for European, Belgian & Flemish shorts.
The 2006 exhibition is STANLEY KUBRICK : a tribute to Stanley Kubrick & Agnes Varda
Formats include 35mm, 70mm, Beta SP, Digital. Competing films must have a running time of at least 60 minutes. Entries should not have been released commercially in Belgium and must be subtitled in Dutch, English or German (unless one of these languages is the original) Awards include various cash prizes.
Deadline for applications is 1st August 2006
The theme for the 33rd edition of the Flanders International Film Festival-Gent will be "The impact of music on film."
