A festival is dedicated and focused on seeking out and promoting cinema created by and for women. This non-profit festival is held during October, breast cancer awareness month. 50% of all ticket sale proceeds are donated to breast cancer research and the outreach/survivorship program for breast cancer patients. The Baltimore Women's Film Festival was founded by women who want to merge cinematic creativity, art and innovation surrounding film festival events with a focus on seeking advancement and change in women's health issues.
The festival is open to films directed, written, shot, animated, produced or edited by a woman. The festival also screens movies which focus on themes that are highly relevant to women and films with outstanding performances by an actress or actresses. Not only does the festival seek to encourage female filmmakers, but also it seeks to get women press coverage and awards that will in turn advance their careers.
The Baltimore Women's Film Festival presents the following jury awards:
Excellence in Short Filmmaking; Best Screenplay; Best International Film; Best Cinematography; Best International Film; Best Documentary Film; Best Animation in a Film; Best Actress in a Short Film; Best Comedic Short; Best Microbudget Short; Best Experimental Film
Criteria for consideration include:
- Movie was directed, written, shot, animated, produced or edited by a woman.
- Movie features a strong performance by a female actress or actresses
- Movie is based on a topic highly relevant to women (movies directed and/or written by men are welcome as long as they fit into category 2 or 3)
