Babelgum Online Film Festival

Babelgum is the personal video experience on the Web 2.0. On September 1, at the Venice Film Festival, it announced the first global online film festival. The festival will be chaired by Spike Lee, the American film director and Visiting Professor of Film Studies at New York University, supported by a judging panel of international film experts in the USA, Europe and India.

There are 7 film categories. The final winner in each category, chosen by Spike Lee, will receive €20,000 presented by Spike personally in May 2008.

The Babelgum Online Film Festival features the following seven competitive categories:

Looking for Genius Award - to new or emerging talent who display clear and outstanding achievement through direction, animation, writing and/or camera work
Short Film Award - to the best short film (preferably under 20 minutes) that presents a clear, concise and original vision using the short film genre
Documentary Award - to the documentary that best presents its subject in a truthful and fair manner while being original and thought provoking
Animation Award - to the film that best displays story and the craft of animation
Social/ Environment Award - to the film that effectively addresses an issue impacting the world today
Spot/ Advertising Award - to the most creative advertising spot highlighting a certain product
Music Video Award - to the most innovative music promo

Films can be uploaded directly to the Babelgum website. The deadline is 15th February 2008.


Submission Information
Videos (250Mb maximum) must qualify for one of the competion's seven categories (see above) and filmmakers must own all the rights including distribution. A film can be submitted to only one category. The festival accepts most common video formats including MP4, MOV and WMW. Videos accepted to the Babelgum Online Film Festival cannot be shown on any similar peer-to-peer streaming web TV platforms during the Babelgum Online Film Festival period.

Running time restrictions vary according to which of the seven categories are entered:
The Short Film Award category – films no longer than 20 minutes
The Music Video Award category – films no longer than 10 minutes
All other entries should be no longer than 50 minutes.

Films not in the English language must be subtitled in English.
