Summary
A fantastic and unique opportunity to get into the documentary world. Hear from and meet execs who are hiring, commissioners who are buying and the directors who are inspiring the next generation of doc filmmakers.
Full description
10am - 6pm

The world of documentary is changing so drastically – and so quickly – that the day will have a dual focus: taking the TV route and making the most of the new world of new media. You can get the lowdown on the television career ladder with a morning of inspiring success stories and insider tips, followed by an afternoon of eye-opening opportunities outside of broadcast, including the chance to pitch to Current TV.

Plus, in a special extension of Newcomers Day, the Mini-MeetMarket returns for the third year running: your chance to pitch your documentary idea to a top Executive Producer or two, who can give you tips on how to develop your idea, improve your pitch, and who might be interested in commissioning the film…

Session One - The ABC (and XYZ) of Getting Into Television
A quirky but informative seminar will discuss all the ways for new and emerging documentary filmmakers to begin working in factual television. From pitching (and not stalking) commissioning editors, to protecting ideas; from working with production companies, to New Talent slots - this seminar offers a comprehensive Beginners Guide to Getting Into Television. Hosted by Andy Glynne with a surprise special commissioner guest, the session will involve contributions from first time filmmakers, experienced directors and Executive Producers.

Session Two - Who Do You Think You Are?
This session is proof that a TV career can happen – but not without answering some difficult questions. Documentary director Olly Lambert has built a career in this crazy industry, working for all the major broadcasters and making award-winning and critically acclaimed docs.  This session will take you through the hazards and pitfalls of building a career that is your own, and ask you some fundamental questions about why you’d ever want to “work in telly”, in the first place.

Session Three - Alternate Reality: Making the Most of the World Outside Broadcast
If the idea of launching your career on the 48th series of ‘Extreme Cooking UK’ doesn’t appeal, then have you ever thought about the myriad other ways in which you can get started in the world of documentary? That world is changing, and if you’re building a career then it’s just as important to get seen on the web as it is on TV. A panel of the very people behind the revolution – web-savvy filmmakers, platforms and distributors – shares their knowledge and tips for getting ahead in this brave new world.

Session Four - The Current TV Pitch
Current TV will run a pitching session in which six lucky individuals will get chance to pitch live to a panel of Current TV executives. The commissioners will be open about their deliberations on stage and give detailed feedback and the best pitch will receive a commission from Current.

The deadline to enter is 20th October 2008. For more details click here.
