One year after the invasion of Iraq, Muthana Mohmed, a Shiite film student from Baghdad, shared his dreams of going to Hollywood with an MTV audience of millions.
American director Liev Schreiber was watching, and on a charitable impulse decides to bring Muthana to the Czech Republic to work as an intern on the set of his feature Everything is Illuminated, starring Elijah Wood. But rather than finding a grateful, hard-working, left-leaning protégé, Muthana turns out to be a Bush-loving, spoilt young man with an attitude. Director Nina Davenport warily becomes emotionally invested – and manipulated – as she watches Muthana blow many chances of making it in the movies, while he at the same time scrambles desperately to avoid returning to a deteriorating Iraq.
A gripping tale that works on many levels, not least as a testament to the complex relationship between documentary filmmaker and subject.
