Between April 1992, when the war in Bosnia began, and January 1993, Muslim forces drove almost every Serb out of Srebrenica town, while fifty nearby Serbian villages were burned down and many of their inhabitants killed. By March 1993, 1200 Serbs are estimated to have been killed, and about 3000 wounded in this small corner of eastern Bosnia. This is the setting for Gordon's award-winning film. As Serb forces close in on Srebrenica a Serbian mother seeks the body of her 11-year old son, who was tortured and killed by Muslims in Bosnia.
