Synopsis:
Produced for Channel 4's True Stories, this documentary captures
the horror and destruction of the Chechen war. On New Year's Eve
1994, 3,500 untrained Russian conscripts were ordered to take the
Chechen town of Grozny. What happened to these mothers' sons is the
brutal mystery Betrayed exposes. "Should I try to find his
grave...dig it up to see if it's my son?" grieves a Russian woman,
one of a group of mothers who have traveled to Chechnya determined
to find out what happened to their sons. Caught between their
country's cover-up and Chechen resistance, they wait patiently as
the film reconstructs the history of a 300-year conflict, unreeling
images of moonscape destruction and mass graves, and documenting
the bureaucratic and military off-loading of responsibility.
In Russian and Chechen with English subtitles
