In a remote Chinese village, tensions are rising. As the last remaining bard of the Nu tribe, Ou Dede is being pressured to share his traditional songs with the rest of the village. In the past, that role would have gone to Ou Dede's eldest son but the singer only has daughters. With the tribal elders pressuring him to either choose one of his daughters or a talented village boy as a successor, the bard is placed in a very difficult situation. When he inexplicably chooses the wrong daughter for the role of village singer (one of his other girls coveted the role), Ou Dede finds himself enmeshed in a family and social crisis. This well-shot, intimate documentary dramatizes the clash between traditional culture and modern political concerns.
