Synopsis:

This film shows the consequences of the construction of the new China. The film opens with desperate unemployed peasants moving to Beijing to try and get a job demolishing and re-building the city. Blending social commentary, frank interviews and evocative imagery, the viewer is led to ponder who really benefits from the endless construction taking place in Beijing. The story is told contrasting the opinions of different individuals and their past experiences. Using songs from Maoist China, news reports and a mixture of colour and black and white photographs Xiaoyan this documentary sets out the many historical and social factors that affect the present situation.
