the most thought-provoking documentaries of the 80s and 90s. A
former philosophy student and private investigator, Errol Morris
has become an important force in the documentary world in America
and has made several feature length documentaries on both political
and philosophical issues. His breakthrough came with the film The
Thin Blue Line (1988), which actually saved an innocent man from
death row. After this he made different films, the last one being
Mr. Death: The Rise and Fall of Dr. Fred Leuchter, Jr. (1999). The
film features interviews with Errol Morris who talks about his work
and his films, whilst German director Werner Herzog and composer
Phillip Glass speak about their co-operation with Morris. The
documentary starts with his first films, Gates of Heaven (1978) and
Vernon, Florida (1981), and ends up with his last ones, A Brief
History of Time (1992), Fast, Cheap and Out of Control (1997) and
Mr. Death (1999). Morris' short career as private detective is also
focused on, and he proudly explains his latest invention - an
interviewing machine.
