Synopsis:

It is 2020 and levels of obesity are at an all-time high. With over two thirds of the country obese or overweight, Britain truly is fat land. The public health consequences are enormous - occurrences of diabetes, cancer and heart disease have gone through the roof and the economy is reeling under the strain. The bill stretches into billions and the impact on the NHS is catastrophic. With no end in sight, rationing of treatment is now beginning to become hard policy.

This drama-documentary unfolds against the backdrop of an obesity treatment programme run by Jane, a clinician who is also part of a research team attached to a London hospital. Throughout the film Jane juggles the demands of her patients on the treatment programme with her other role as a biologist coordinating a major research project in the lab. The focus of her research gradually becomes clear - she has been working for several years on the effect of hormones on appetite - how the body decides it's eaten enough. Her team are searching for an effective treatment for obesity by synthesising this hormone which suppresses appetite. Jane has been using herself as a guinea pig. The results look promising but progress is hampered by funding problems and frustrated by bureaucratic inertia.
