A director of both formatted factual entertainment shows such as Watercolour Challenge, and of hard-hitting documentaries, Williams was able to move betwen the two. Having made programmes for Panorama, Nationwide and Dispatches, he also worked for European broadcasters such as ARTE and RTF and for American PBS, for whom he was shooting a follow up to his 2003 film Saddam's Deadly Legacy when he died in Iraq of a heart attack in 2005.
