A Hungarian who fled Budapest after the uprising in 1956, Vas' first film - Refuge England, about a Hungarian refugee's first impressions - was shown as part of the final Free Cinema programme in 1959. A contemporary of Lindsay Anderson and Karel Reisz, Vas remained committed to documentary after the end of the Free Cinema movement, working for the National Coal Board and then the BBC. He made numerous films about Britain and Eastern Europe before his death in 1978 at the age of 47.
