Tanya Stephan started out as a reporter and presenter for a BBC Radio Scotland arts and features programme. She went on to study documentary directing at the National Film and TV School. Her graduation film Naz about the daughter of Zoora Shah who was given a controversial life sentence for murder, was commissioned as a Storyville and nominated for Best Documentary at the Royal Television Society Student Awards in 2001.
Her first film for Channel 4, Michael, about a 16 year-old boy’s unfolding schizophrenia was nominated for Best Newcomer at the Grierson Awards and Best Single at the RTS Education Awards in 2003.
In her subsequent films for BBC2 and Channel 4, her sensitive observational approach has gained her access to some of the most intimate aspects of people’s lives.
