b, 1914 d. 1999
Born in London, Craigie worked as a writer and actress before becoming a documentary scriptwriter. She directed her first documentary, Out of Chaos, in 1944; one of Britain's first women directors. She continued to make documentaries for the next few years, during which time she met and married future Labour leader Michael Foot. Frustrated with attitudes toward women directors from the industry, she gave up directing in the fifties, turning instead to screenwriting. The war in Yugoslavia brought her out of retirement and her final film, about the destroyed city of Dubrovnik,Two Hours From London, was shown on the BBC in 1995.
Craigie was also instrumental in the setting up of women's publisher Virago and was an authority on the women's suffrage movement; at the time of her death she left an uncompleted work on the subject.
