Churchill, Joan  person Joan Churchill studied film at UCLA under Professor Colin Young, founder of the National Film School. After leaving UCLA, Joan shot the documentary An American Family and two feature films for Peter Watkins: Punishment Park and Evening Land. At the invitation of Young, she came to the UK to teach at the NFTS where she met Nick Broomfield and the two began a collaboration that has spanned thirty years.

She is the recipient of the first Lifetime Achievement award from the International Documentary Association, and the first person to purely make documentaries inducted into the American Society of Cinematographers.
