b. 1928 d. 2004
An Australian and ex-Daily Express reporter, Hewat joined Granada in 1957, where he worked on What the Papers Say. He worked with Jeremy Isaacs on Searchlight, a current affairs strand, but which still used a presenter. Then, in 1963, World in Action launched, with Hewat as the first editor. Eschewing the reassuring presence of a presenter, the programmes produced in this strand were famed for their hard-hitting, issue-based approach.
Hewat returned to Australia in 1968, where he continued to work as a producer and writer.
