Jill is an award winning independent filmmaker. She has been making films since 1975, producing drama, documentary and experimental films. Early experimental narrative films include Description, a double screen film shown in the Expanded Film Festival 1976, at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London and distributed by Lux. In 1990 she made the short feature I’m In Heaven, a drama about a Jewish woman who, after an unhappy marriage, never leaves her high-rise flat and has retreated into a pastiche of Jewish ritual life. It won the prize for best fiction film at the Huesca Short Film Festival Spain in 1991. Her recent work explores the nature of displacement and exile. In Lost in Gainesville, she follows the journeys, internal and external, of Mexican migrants trapped between the hope of a new and more prosperous life and a yearning for the world left behind. Small Town Girl, filmed over 5 years, follows the lives of three adolescent girls in two small run-down towns at either ends of England at the start of the 20th century. Her current film, Traces: 1, the first in a series of films exploring the area between documentary and fiction, looks at the affect of the Spanish civil war on a small ruined town and its inhabitants, in the north of Spain. She has won many awards for her films, which have been shown in festivals and television, throughout the world.
